2 cups white flour
2 cups graham flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 T. anise seed
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dry ingredients. cut in shortening. Add buttermilk. Roll out thinly. Cut into diamond-shaped pieces. Place on a greased cookie sheet. bake at 400º F, for 12 to 15 minutes.

*Caitlin has her Great Grandpa Chester's red hair and bright blue eyes. She has his spunk, too.
Our dad loved hardtack. He bought it at the store and would slice cheese, lay it across the top of the hardtack and eat it that way. I think all of us kids liked it, but not nearly as much as our dad did!
