Directions:Back when I was a kid, there were a lot of outside games to play and all you needed was an imagination and a lot of kids, Sides were chosen up, with the biggest, strongest and most competitive players picked first and the weaker *attention deficit type kids were picked last, which I always fit in the latter catagory. You would line up for a game of "Red Rover", "Red Light Green Light", "Captain May I", "Calling All Cars", "Kick the Can", "Anty Over", "Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow", "Fox and Geese", and occasionally when you wanted to let your arm rest from playing "Red Rover" you could get a game of "Drop the Handkerchief" going because no big, strong kid in his right mind would play that baby game. The big guys would usually go throw rocks at the barn sparrow nests on the side of the barn when we got into the "Drop the Handkerchief Game", but usually not without some parting words from them, such as "baby, baby you can't take it," with which we cleverly replied "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words shall never hurt me", along with a tongue stuck out for good measure.

I went to school, one day, and overheard some kids talking about prank phone calls. Hmmm, I thought, I could do that. So, when I got home from school, I slipped into my mom and dads room, picked up the phone and called our neighbors Betty and Donny Martinson. Betty answered the phone and I told her I was from a radio station and if she could correctly answer my question she would win a free trip to Hawaii. I do not recall the question I asked, but I do recall she got it right. I said "And now you have won a free trip to Hawaii! Get your swimming suit on and start swimming!" I chuckled so heartily ... there was dead silence on the other end of the line...ohhh ohhh. I quickly hung up the phone, worrying that she would discover who was on this side of the phone lline. I sat there for a few minutes and thought what's going to happen to me if mom and dad find out that I prank called someone? So I quickly picked up the phone and dialed their number again. Betty answered and she didn't sound too happy. I said, "Betty this is Jacke and I am sorry but you did not win a free trip to Hawaii." She said "Don't ever do that again, Jackie!" I never did and I don't think she ever told mom and dad about the call.
"It takes a village to raise a kid" was as true back then as it is now although back then the wife of an ex-president (who couldn't even keep track of her own husband's activities) didn't have to tell you that in a book. They all knew that is what you did! Everyone always looked out for everyone elses kids, in our neighborhood and we respected everyones mothers as much as our own. Betty knew that I'd never do THAT again. Sorry mom!
