Mix together and smooth over the ham during the last 1/2 hours of cooking. Baste as necessary.

Aunt Mary normally took over the cooking as nan got older. However, Nan would always take a look, stir, and taste. Nan's house on Saturday morning usually greeted visitors with the aroma of pea soup cooking on the stove.
