5 c. cold water

9 c. rendered hog fat, lukewarm

1 Tbsp. Borax
1 tsp. sugar

Directions:
First dissolve lye in water, using an enamel pan or iron kettle. Add borax and sugar.

Pour lye solution into fat in large iron kettle very slowly. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden paddle or a strong stick. Let the pan of soap mixture stand 24 hours. Cover with a cloth until it's hard and ready to cut into bars and use.

Our Mother made this soap which we used for bathing and laundry. Later we bought soap for bathing but she continued to make it for laundry until the late nineteen fifties.
