2 1/3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
2 t. baking soda
1 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. each: cloves and nutmeg
4 cups chopped and peeled apples
1/2 cup softened butter
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
caramel frosting (recipe follows)

Directions:
Directions:
Combine the dry ingredients and mis until blended. Add the apples, butter, nuts and eggs and beat at medium speed until well blended. Pour into a 9x13" greased and floured pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes or until done. Cool completely on a wire rack. Frost in the pan with the following frosting:

1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
dash salt
3 T. milk
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/4 t. vanilla

Melt butter in a small saucepan and add brown sugar and salt. Stir over medium heat until the sugar melts. Add milk and bring to a boil. Pout into a bowl and cool for 10 minutes. Add sugar and vanilla and beat until spreading consistency. Frost the cooled cake.
