2 c. sifted cake flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. butter
3/4 c. sugar
1 c. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg (optional)
Sauce:
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. cornstarch
dash of salt
dash of cinnamon
1 c. water
2 tbsp. butter

Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder, salt and sift again, set aside. Cream butter and sugar gradually together. Add flour alternately with milk a small amount at a time, beating after each addition until smooth. Add vanilla. Bake in greased pan, 8x8x2 in moderate oven (350º) 30-35 minutes. Serve hot with vanilla or lemon sauce.
Sauce: Mix ingredients. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until thick and clear. Add butter. Makes 1 /3 cups.
