1/2 c.Shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 heaping tbsp. cocoa
2oz red food coloring
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. white vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar, add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add to creamed mixture. Add flour alternately with buttermilk, then add the salt and vanilla. Mix baking soda and vinegar, careful it foams, blend in with a spoon, DO NOT BEAT! Bake 15 to 20 minutes in 3 greased and floured pans (I use only use 2 pans) in preheated 350º oven or until done. Top with Red Icing after completely cooled.

Aunt Corrine (Dad's sister) got this recipe from a hotel in Ga. It is one of our family favorites, made for several birthdays each year.
