1 c. brown sugar-firmly packed
1 c. shortening
1 c. buttermilk
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
dash salt
5 1/2 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Add and mix well. Add flour 1 cup at a time and beat until blended. Divide stiff dough into equal portions on a greased cookie sheet. Pat into a circle of 16 inch diameter. Bake each one in a 5x7 inch pan at 350 degrees. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool on a rack. Make a filling of 1 c. molasses, 6 1/2 c. apple butter or dried apples. Spread evenly between each layer. Sprinkle with powdered sugar
