1 cup lukewarm milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup soft shortening
1 cake compressed yeast or 1 packet dry granular yeast
1 egg (or 2 egg yolks plus 1 tablespoon water)
3 1/2 - 3 3/4 cups sifted flour in 2 additions using amount necessary to make dough easy to handle

Mix together milk, sugar, salt and shortening, crumble in yeast. Stir until yeast is dissolved, stir in egg. Mix in, first with spoon then with hand, flour using the amount necessary to make dough easy to handle. Cover and let rise until double.
Turn onto floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Round up and place in greased bowl, cover and let rise in warm place until almost double about 45 minutes, punch down and let rise another 15 minutes. Cut into pieces the size of walnuts and form into balls. Roll into melted butter (about 1/2 cup) then into a mixture of 3/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 cup finely copped or ground walnuts. Place in a greased 9 inch tube center pan barely touching. Continue to layer balls in the pan until done. Cover with damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until double in size about 45 minutes. Bake 35-40 minutes in 375º.
