2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup white karo syrup
1/4 tsp. salt
4 tsp. anise extract or 2 tsp anise oil
red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Put first 4 ingredients in heavy pot and cook until the sugar is dissolve;
boil to the hard crack stage as measured on a candy thermometer; remove from heat and add flavoring and coloring;DO NOT STIR
gently rock the pot until it is mixed.

Pour onto a cookie sheet and it will start to harden quickly;
score or cut right away into bite size pieces with a pizza cutter and then use a knife on the edges.

Once cool the candy will break apart better.
Be careful when breaking it apart as it may be sharp.

This was Grama Bertha Doering's favorite candy. When she was in the Alzheimer's unit in Sioux Falls for a time, I always made it for her so when we went to visit her I had it for her. She was so happy.
