1 pkg yeast dissolved in 1/4c. warm water
1 1/4 c. milk heated until a film forms on top.
Stir into milk 4 T butter, 1/2 c. sugar & 1 1/2 tsp. salt
Cool to warm touch and add yeast.
Add 4 1/2 c. flour and mix until soft dough forms.
Place dough in a greased bowl & brush with butter.
Cover and let rise until double. (I place in a 200 F. oven and turn heat off.)

Divide dough in half and each half into 3 pieces.
Cut each of the 6 pieces into 6 each.
Roll to finger length and make a braid with 3 pieces, pinching ends.
Put one braid on top of the other. Place on cookie sheet. Make 6 loaves.
Let rise until double - 2 hours.
Bake at 350º - 35-40 minutes. Brush with butter when done.

Note: Go ahead and double the recipe so you'll have plenty to share!

This must be designated my "signature" recipe. I have been known to stay up into the wee hours baking this bread for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
