1 1/2 cups sugar

3 to 4 cups of flower

Directions:
Cream butter and gradually add sugar beating until very light.
Add eggs, beaten until light
Add soda dissolved in warm water.
Put nutmeg, salt and cream of tartar into 1 cup of flour. Gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix
well
Continue adding flour until all is used, beating until smooth.
Chill the dough overnight in the refrigerator.
Flour wax paper and rolling pin.
Roll out a small portion at a time, cut with cookie cutter and remove to cookie sheet.

*Roll out as thin as possible for best results. I roll them out on floured wax paper as they stick to the surface sometimes.
Take the left over dough from the wax paper and put it back into the refrigerator again to cool. Add the
the left over dough to other left over dough, refrigerate and roll out and cut again.

Decorate the cookies with colored sugar and cinnamon imps.

Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes.
Remove cookies while hot to a cookie rack covered with wax paper.

Enjoy!

Personal Notes:
This is a recipe from my Godmother Helen Bush. She made these every Christmas for us when I was growing up. We waited anxiously for the treasured Christmas cookies. She did not share the recipe with anyone. She did eventually share it with me. We made them at Christmas when Brooke, Charlie and Melissa were growing up. I think more sugar got on the floor than on the cookies. LOL.
