1 c. water
1 c. raisins
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening ( could be crisco, margarine or butter)
2 cup flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. nutmeg.

Directions:
Directions:
Combine the first list of ingredients in a sauce pan and cook for 10 minutes. Allow to cool for 15-20 minutes. Add the second list of ingredients to the cooled mixture. Drop teaspoonfuls onto greased and floured cookie sheets. Bake about 15 to 20 minutes at 350 deg.

I have no idea why these are called "Poor Man's Cookies", unless the ingredients are such, that almost everyone would have them. There are no "exotics" in the list. They are really good.
