1½ lbs beef chuck, cut in 1-in. cubes
1 Tbsp. shortening
1 clove garlic, minced
1 medium onion, chopped
½ tsp. salt
⅛ tsp. pepper
1 can (10¾-oz) tomato soup, undiluted
¼ cup dry red wine
¼ cup water
¼ tsp. basil
¼ tsp. thyme
½ cup ketchup
3 medium carrots, cut in ½-in pieces
1½ cups celery, cut in 1-in pieces
4 medium potatoes,quartered

Directions:
Directions:
Brown beef chuck in shortening. Add garlic and onion. Sauté until onion is transparent. Add salt and pepper. Stir in soup, wine, and water.

Cover and simmer 30 minutes.

Add basil, thyme, and ketchup. Arrange remaining vegetables on top.

Cover, then simmer for 1½-2 hours.
