2 pkgs. active dry yeast
1-1/2 C. lukewarm milk*
1/2 C. sugar
2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 C. soft shortening (or butter)
7 - 7-1/2 C. flour

Frosting:
1-1/2 C. Confectioner's sugar
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
Milk to desired consistency (slightly runny)

*milk is scalded (heat to where small bubbles form along the side of the saucepan) and then cooled to lukewarm.

Egg wash: 1 egg yolk mixed with water.

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in water. Add milk, sugar, salt, and shortening or butter and half of the flour. Mix to incorporate all ingredients. Add enough remaining flour to handle easily. Turn onto floured surface and knead, about 5 min. Let rise until double.

Divide dough into 2 parts, 1 larger and 1 slightly smaller. Divide each section into thirds. Starting with the larger portion, braid the be sections together. Repeat the same thing with the smaller section and place the braid on top of the larger braid. Let rise.

Make and egg was and brush on top of the bread.

Bake at 350º until golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. (Around 30-35 min.)

While the bread is cooking, make icing. Mix the confectioner's sugar with vanilla and add milk a little at a time until it is slighly runny.

While bread is hot, drizzle icing over the bread and into the poked holes. If you want to add some after the bread has cooled, you can.

To make this festive at Christmas, add candied fruit as a garnish on the bread.

When taken out, poke holes with a toothpick around the creases between the braids and inside the braids.

Personal Notes:
This was a recipe Wesely made when I was still living at home. I decided I wanted to make it and he gave me the recipe. This is great around Christmas because it makes quite a bit, can be made decorative, and it makes terrific toast in the morning!
